Kitchen Designer

I finally decided on my Kitchen Designer to realise my dream kitchen at The Park Residences!
My dream kitchen must feature curves, must be ergonomic and I so want a breakfast bar!

First up, I paid a visit to Signature Kitchen at Mid Valley Megamall but the kitchen planner just quoted me a lump sum amount for the kitchen although she did take the effort to draw the design in 3D. Too bad - I want the details not the drawing.....
Unsatisfied I went to another Signature Kitchen branch - this time at TTDI and received another quote but it's slightly more detailed. However, I find that Signature Kitchen's kitchen planners do not really bother to find out what you want in your kitchen and they say they can quote you a sum - without asking what type of cabinetry and other requirements. Too bad again....

I also considered Kitchen Palace TTDI - since they installed my current kitchen 6 years ago. The boss, Mr. AK Ng, handled my order last time. This time round, I was assigned a very fresh interior designer who's not very experienced plus I had to travel to their branch at Kota Damansara. So, I decided not to go ahead with Kitchen Palace this time.

Another place I went to (since it's just along the same row of shophouses at TTDI), was Quisine Culture. Somehow, I didn't quite like their proposal but the designer did take the time (2 weeks) to complete 3D drawings of the proposed kitchen.

I went to Bofi at Solaris Dutamas too cos I saw that they had this kitchen model with round base named Milano. I went there twice but still no quotation - only a 3D drawing - even that, without the round base cabinet that I wanted. It was quite frustrating cos I had to deal with a sales person and not the kitchen designer himself. The salesperson wasn't very helpful with telling me the cost and all. They took over 2 weeks to produce the 3D drawing design but without any quotation - what's the point? I want to know how much it costs and also what materials are included in the quotation.

I was very impressed with Kuchenmatic at TTDI - they were formerly known as Hosana Kitchen. The boss, Eric attended to me very systematically and within a matter of hours I had received an email attached with the quotation (good thing it didn't cost a bomb!). He impressed me by explaining to me the features of his kitchen cabinets and he even sat down with me to discuss the design which was drawn on-the-spot. He clearly has the experience and expertise. He also didn't need a copy of my floor plan cos he copied all the dimensions into his piece of paper! Just by pressing the buttons on his calculator, he can tell me what design can work and what can't. So, at the third meet-up I paid a deposit of RM2000 as booking fee. He said to inform him as soon as I get the keys to my new condo unit and he will go over to do the measurements stat. I hope my kitchen will turn out fantastic under Eric's supervision. He has a few orders from other residents of The Park Residences too!

To summarise - here's what I would look for in a Kitchen Designer
1) Experience & expertise - you can gauge this just by talking and asking questions
2) Accountability - very prompt reply with the quotation unlike those that you have to 'chase'.
3) Personality - pleasant and polite.
4) Easy to communicate with - no language barriers.
5) Passionate about his job.

  1. Having read all the good things about Kuchenmatic from your blog early this year, I went ahead engaging Eric to build the dream kitchen for my fiance. Now it is completed, sad to say he screwed up my kitchen. I will blog about this soon to share with you and the rest of home-reno seekers my nightmare with this so called kitchen specialist.

  3. OMG! So at last what did you do? I have a same concept with you like www.pedini.com.my sample. I like curve asomething unique.
However Malaysia cant do it as we don't have that technology. What others can do is just by doing lamination on a plywood. Plywood is not stable if we are doing a curve. This is what I got from Signature Kitchen Kota Damansara.

Which Kitchen Planner you recommend? Kian Classic or Signature Kitchen?

  4. I have not tried those 2 before but Signature Kitchen apparently is reliable.

  5. Kian Classic sales person is vomit blood. Only during fair the service is good after that you are on your own. Make sure if ur engaging them ask for transparent and in detail quotation only u pay. How much it is cost on the invoice for per feet/foot must stated. ... twice I am with them.

I already paid deposit but the salesperson delay my stuffs. Anyway luckily I am not in hurry. Only one drawing and if u request more than 3 drawing they just ignore you. After that you're only following up ur own case they wont try to call you anymore.

  6. Then I opt for Signature Kitchen and asked for quotation with drawing. Mid Valley sales people said they wont design customers drawing until they paid. I paid deposit and I get a drawing after I fed up with Kian Classic. Luckily my deposit is not a large amount. Problem is they don't give you a quotation with details of pricing especially the cutlery tray, blum, ...etc. When asked they said the computer system only can show one lump sum pricing to customers only and cant show in detail. I call in and enquire they said I must look back to the sale person who deal with me. I feel from the conversation the price is not standardised. Good things about Kian Classic is they tell you price per foot they charging instead of per box by signature kitchen.

Signature Kitchen only design what they feel good but they don't try to meet customer criteria.

When asked while the price is so costly Signature Kitchen said they used E2 board and not E3 or E4 board. E1 board only for imported unit. Malaysia don't have. To me Kian Classic board and Signature Kitchen board is the same. Matters only design, experiences, services, materials in terms of cutlery tray, and systems they use.

For the solid surface, signature kitchen sales ppl claimed their only use imported material like Corian brand, silestone,... But during fair time you will only be getting Corian brand Glacier white only where all others company is also using. So is not only SK company is using.

For Silestone brand selected colours only. Only 3 colours which is not nice to me for dry kitchen. If you want to get others the price is expensive.

    Service is slow.

  7. Service is damn slow for signature kitchen. Mind you, you need to pay full price once u cfm with them & the installation can be 1-2 mths down the road. Regretted choosing SK!!

  8. I made the Terrible Mistake of signing up during 1 of these Home Dec fairs. As usual you are promised the moon and the stars but when it comes down to delivery the simple answer is 'we are busy.. too many orders...' and the worst part is that we are 'forced' to make full payment before any work can be done and they don't have to comply with any time frames.
The classic has to be that when they sell you their package, it's sold with the oven, hob, hood , sink etc.... BUT, Signature Kitchen does NOT install these items... YOU have to find a contractor to do it for You.
Personally this so called Kitchen Specialist is nothing more than a Glorified Cabinet Maker.
Now after nearly 2 months of waiting, they now tell us that the Countertop that was chosen [nearly 2 months earlier!!!] is out of stock!!!!???

  9. If Anyone is taking Signature Kitchen, make sure you get every last detail in writing, They are quick to insist on full payment... delivery is a completely different issue.

  10. I went to a few to enquire, including 3 different branches of SK and I got 3 different prices for the same design -_- . Almost sign up for their package until neighbour at my new condo complained about poor workmanship, young workers (directly fr. their factory) accidentally bore through the slaps and after 2 weeks no one from SK attended to them. It's all about luck I guess with SK.
